FAQS

All You Need to Know Before Visiting Inishturk

  • How do I get to Inishturk?

Ferries run from Roonagh Pier near Louisburgh, Co. Mayo. The journey takes about 50 minutes and offers stunning views along the way. We recommend arriving early, especially in high season.

  • What should I pack for the island?

Layers, waterproofs, and sturdy walking shoes are essentials. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, and your camera. The weather can change quickly, even in summer!

  • Do I need to book experiences in advance?

Yes! Our tours and activities often sell out—especially in peak season. Booking ahead ensures you don’t miss out.

  • Where can I eat on the island?

The Community Club & Restaurant serves locally sourced meals, coffee, and snacks—with what many call the “best view in Ireland.” You’re also welcome to bring a picnic.

  • Is there a shop on the island?

Yes, it’s always best to shop local! Located at The Community Club, the Inishturk Community Shop offers hundreds of items to fuel your adventure and proceeds from each sale support island community projects. Opening times depend on the time of year you plan to visit, these can be found on The Shop page of inishturkisland.com or social media.

  • Can I stay overnight on Inishturk?

Absolutely. We offer cosy B&Bs, guesthouses, and self-catering cottages.

  • Are the walking trails suitable for all levels?

Most trails are moderate, but some coastal routes are steep and rocky. We recommend good footwear and checking with locals for current trail conditions.

  • Is Inishturk family-friendly?

Yes! Families love the open spaces, calm atmosphere, and child-friendly adventures. Many of our experiences are suitable for kids aged 6+.

  • Can I bring my dog?

Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead, especially near sheep and nesting birds. Some accommodations may have specific pet policies, so check in advance.

  • Is there Wi-Fi or mobile signal on the island?

Yes, but signal strength can vary depending on your provider. Many accommodations and the Community Club offer Wi-Fi, perfect for sharing your adventure photos!

  • Is the island accessible for visitors with disabilities?

The Community Club is wheelchair accessible, and we’re working to improve accessibility across the island. Contact us before your visit so we can assist with specific needs.

  • Do you accept cards or is cash preferred?

Most places accept cards, but it’s a good idea to bring some cash, especially for smaller businesses or if signal is limited.

Care for Community

Leave No Trace

Help Protect the Wild Beauty of Inishturk

Inishturk is one of Ireland’s most remote inhabited islands, a place of rare natural beauty, quiet wildlife, and deep cultural heritage. To keep it that way, we ask every visitor to follow Leave No Trace principles during their time here.

Take Only Photos, Leave Only Footprints

There are no public bins along walking trails—please bring your litter back with you and dispose of it properly.

Respect Wildlife & Livestock

Inishturk is home to nesting seabirds, grazing sheep, and rare plants. Stay on marked trails, don’t disturb animals, and keep dogs on leads at all times.

No Campfires

Open fires and disposable BBQs are strictly prohibited due to the risk of wildfires and damage to sensitive habitats.

Stick to Trails

Walking paths help protect fragile flora and prevent erosion. Avoid cutting across the landscape, especially in boggy or coastal areas.

Be Sound to Locals & Land

Much of the island is community-owned or privately farmed. Be mindful, ask before crossing farmland, and always close gates behind you.

Minimise Waste

Reuse bottles, reduce packaging, and avoid bringing single-use plastics to the island. Every bit makes a difference.
