Farming a Commonage
in the Atlantic Ocean

Overview

Farming a Commonage in the Atlantic Ocean

Explore Inishturk’s living agricultural heritage on this immersive full-day experience led by a local island farmer. This walking-based tour offers rare insight into how generations of islanders have worked the shared hill commonage of Inishturk and nearby Caher Island, sustaining farming traditions shaped by land, sea, and community.

Farming on Inishturk is rooted in cooperation and resilience. On this guided experience, participants walk the island’s open commonage with a local farmer, learning how land is shared among families and how sheep farming has adapted to the Atlantic environment over centuries.

Stories of currach transport, lambing, shearing, turf cutting, and seasonal rhythms are woven through the landscape, offering a deeper understanding of island life past and present. The experience forms part of a relaxed full-day visit, with lunch and free time included.
