First Encounter with Inishturk
For a short and lovely day trip to Inishturk Island, start in the iconic Westport Town Centre and drive to Roonagh Pier and take the shuttle to Roonagh Pier for the morning ferry from the back entrance of SuperValu. The bus departs 45 minutes before each sailing and should be reserved at least 12 hours in advance by calling (087)2234012.
SET SAIL
The sailing from Roonagh across Clew Bay offers a chance to spot dolphins, porpoises, grey seals, seabirds, and in season, basking sharks gliding through the Atlantic waters.
Beaches, Birds, and Breathtaking Views.
Once ashore, take in the harbour views of Caher Island, Croagh Patrick, and the surrounding bays. There’s a picnic area and a cheerful playground if you’re visiting with children. From here, head to Tranuan or Curraun Beaches for paddling, beachcombing, or listening for the distinctive calls of the corncrake in early summer. You’ll build up an appetite, so Caher View Restaurant just nearby is a must visit. Choose from a menu of classic pub fare and local seafood specials in a dining room with the best view in Ireland; overlooking Caher Island, Clare Island, Croagh Patrick and the dramatic coastlines of Mayo and North Connemara.
After lunch treat to keep up the holiday energy with a stop at the Inishturk Community Shop for ice-cream or souvenirs (Open: Monday–Saturday 13:00–15:00; Sunday and Bank Holidays 12:00–13:00) where each purchase goes back to the community!
The afternoon can be spent enjoying the vistas of the Mountain Common Loop Walk with a stroll to the Scenic Football Pitch, one of the most dramatic sports fields in the world perched above the Atlantic and a walk up to the Napoleonic Signal Tower, where wildflowers like sea thrift, heather, and kidney vetch dot the cliffs and the sea stacks of Buachaill Mór and Buachaill Beag make for a spectacular backdrop. Maps can be found at the Inishturk Community Club and allow up to 3hrs for the walk, a run around the football pitch and the many photos taken of stunning Inishturk!
Finish the day with the 5:15 PM* ferry back to the mainland, enjoying the views and keeping an eye out for wildlife on the crossing.
*Summer and Winter timetables are seasonal and weather dependent, so always check with Inishturk Passenger Ferries before your trip!
